India’s premium spirits industry is gaining global attention as Camikara, a homegrown rum brand, continues to win major international accolades and challenge the dominance of traditional rum-producing regions.

Produced by Piccadilly Agro Industries, Camikara has emerged as a standout example of India’s growing capability in crafting premium spirits. The brand recently achieved global recognition after winning the prestigious “Rum Brand of the Year” title at the Spirits Business Awards in London, becoming the first Indian rum to claim the honour.

Redefining What Indian Rum Can Be

Unlike most rums in India that are made from molasses, Camikara is produced from fresh sugarcane juice, following a method closer to the “agricole” style traditionally associated with regions such as Martinique. This production process helps create a more complex and natural flavour profile.

The rum is matured in American oak barrels, allowing it to develop deeper notes and aromas over time. The brand currently offers several aged expressions including three-year, eight-year, and twelve-year variants.

Global Awards Put India on the Rum Map

Industry observers say Camikara’s international wins are a significant milestone for India’s spirits sector. By outperforming established brands from traditional rum-producing regions such as the Caribbean and Latin America, the brand has helped shift global perceptions about Indian rum.

In addition to the “Rum Brand of the Year” title, the rum has also secured medals at global competitions including the Rum & Cachaça Masters Awards, reinforcing its growing reputation among international spirits experts.

A Sign of India’s Premium Spirits Boom

The rise of Camikara reflects a broader shift in the Indian alcohol industry, where producers are increasingly focusing on premium craftsmanship and global quality standards rather than mass-market production.

With international awards and rising global curiosity about Indian spirits, brands like Camikara are helping position India as an emerging player in the premium rum category.
